Headlight Restoration vs. Replacement: Which Is Better?

Guide by HB Headlight Restoration

Compare restoration and replacement for oxidation, cracks, moisture, seals, tabs, reflectors, and electrical issues.

Start with the failure

Exterior restoration addresses a weathered lens face. Replacement addresses an assembly that is cracked, leaking, structurally broken, electrically damaged, or no longer serviceable.

Restoration candidates

A working assembly with yellowing, haze, oxidation, light pitting, or a failed outer coating may be suitable, depending on prior work and remaining condition.

When replacement fits

Cracks, broken mounts, failed seals, internal moisture, reflectors, wiring, and severe internal crazing generally require parts or repair beyond exterior work.

Compare complete costs

Replacement varies by vehicle, technology, part source, labor, aiming, and calibration. Restoration varies by severity, lenses, access, coatings, and method.
